Global Payment Technologies & PAX partnership brings POS solutions to South Africa

Johannesburg, South Africa, August 1, 2011 – Global Payment Technologies (GPT), a Bidvest company, has entered into a strategic partnership with PAX Technology, a global provider of payment card industry (PCI) and Europay, Mastercard and Visa (EMV) compliant secure Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals. The alliance will enable GPT to supply secure payment solutions on PAX’s flagship terminals, the S80 and S58 countertop devices, the S90 mobile wireless device as well as SP30 and MT30 multilane PINpads to the South African market.

Trevor Chamberlain, Managing Director at GPT, says many South African banks and retailers are closely following developments in the POS industry and have been monitoring the rapid growth of PAX globally. “This strategic alliance will enable GPT, a fully South African owned payment provider, to provide customers with a complete range of PCI compliant POS solutions, backed up by an extended national footprint of 12 branches countrywide for merchant deployment, field support services and hardware repair”.

These innovative secure payment solutions will provide retailers and banks the opportunity to protect South African shoppers’ credit card information and protect card holder details. The joint GPT-PAX offering will, amongst other services, encrypt transmission of cardholder data and maintain secure Point-of-Sale systems and applications. It also provides regular monitoring and testing of networks. This alliance brings a much needed service to the South African market. Using non-compliant PCI systems, for instance displaying full credit card numbers, could leave retailers in violation of PCI compliance and subject to fines.

Mark O’Flynn, EMEA Regional Sales Manager at PAX says South Africa’s acquiring banks and major retailers now have a viable and highly competitive alternative brand to choose from when buying POS terminal solutions. He says consolidation in the global POS manufacturer space has translated into a serious lack of competition in South Africa.

Andrew Wu, VP for EMEA at PAX contends that the PAX POS terminals and PINpads have an excellent reputation for long-life durability and come with a full 12 month warranty on equipment failure. PAX also believes in the sharing of software application source code, so banks and retailers can effectively control their POS strategy..
